We all cherish gifts in our daily lives. Life itself is the greatest gift — a miraculous offering about which we still wonder: Why were we given it? How did we come to receive it?
No matter how attractive or impressive the wrapping (the cover) of a gift may be, its true value lies within — in the core. The wrapper may add charm or enhance anticipation, but it is often of little or no use beyond first impressions. The real worth is revealed only when the cover is removed. Sometimes, a beautiful wrapper highlights the excellence of the core; at other times, it merely tries to conceal flaws.
We see this phenomenon everywhere — in the food industry, where the final garnishing of a dish draws admiration, and in the fashion world, where a model’s polished appearance dazzles millions. These embellishments bring joy and colour to life, and they are certainly welcome. Yet, in today’s increasingly materialistic world, the danger lies in mistaking the cover for the core.
The glare and shine of external appearances have become so overwhelming that they often blind us to inner value.
In such times, we urgently need to cultivate x-ray minds — minds that can pierce through appearances and recognize the true core beneath the surface.
How can you develop an x-ray mind?
The journey begins with self-examination.
Ask yourself:
- Are you using external behaviours — excessive politeness, curated appearances — to mask your own shortcomings?
- Are you projecting a persona to impress others rather than allowing your true self to shine?
- Integrity – Moral soundness and honesty.
- Humility – Absence of false pride.
- Fidelity – Faithfulness and loyalty.
- Temperance – Moderation in thoughts and actions.
- Courage – Strength to stand by what is right.
- Justice – Fairness in dealing with others.
- Patience – Steadfastness during difficulties.
- Industry – Determination and hard work.
- Simplicity – Living free from unnecessary complexities.
- Modesty – Freedom from vanity and excessive pride.
